The Speakers Bureau
Mentoring, science fair judging, and workplace visits
In our database of volunteers, we have scientists that are willing to act as mentors to students with a specific scientific interest, judge at your science fair, conduct tours of their workplace, or lead field trips. If you would like to find out more about the availability of these options, email asla@dal.ca
ASLA also offers mentorship events for high school girls interested in STEM through our Women in STEM Mentorship Network.
Conferences for science teachers
ASLA holds a bi-annual science conference, where science teachers are invited to Dalhousie for one day to take part in interactive, hands-on sessions, exploring activities and experiments that can be easily adapted for their students. All materials align with the Nova Scotia science curriculum. The event takes place in August every other year.
Junior high science contests
ASLA hosts a province-wide science contest for junior high students which was developed to challenge students' knowledge while having them further engage with science. To date, ASLA has hosted two contests, in 2019 and 2023, mailing thousands of contests to students across the province. After each contest, the top-scoring students have been invited to an awards ceremony to honour their achievement. The contest is advertised via email directly to schools.
“We really believe that these experiences enrich the lives of our students and help them to grow as learners, athletes, and good citizens of their community”

Resources
The Speakers Bureau invites volunteer scientists and innovators to visit classrooms in their community. Our mission is to inspire students in grades primary to twelve as they develop key attitudes toward science and technology. We believe that exposing students to the real scientists and innovators in their own communities is a valuable addition to science curriculum, and creates a tangible link to classroom theory and offers exposure to possible career paths. And the best part is, it's completely free! What better way to learn about subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, the environment, or engineering, than from those that have made a career of these subjects? If you would like to book a scientist/innovator visit for your classroom, please fill the below request form!
